According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 14 million people suffer from rosacea. The skin disorder causes redness. The discoloration often spreads across the nose, forehead, and cheeks. It occurs in individuals ages 30 to 50 years old. Typically, fair-skinned people with blond hair and blue eyes who are of Celtic or Scandinavian ancestry are afflicted.
In addition to skin discolorations, rosacea causes other signs and symptoms depending on the subtype.
- Ocular rosacea: Your eyelids may swell, and, in some cases, an inflamed area might develop that looks like a sty. The eyes become red and irritated.
- Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Skin redness, visible blood vessels, and flushing.
- Papulopustular rosacea: Acne-like breakouts occur, redness and swelling can also erupt.
- Phymatous rosacea: The skin takes on a bumpy texture and may thicken.
Treatment of rosacea can include the following:
- Prescription medications to help reduce the redness.
- Oral antibiotics to combat bacteria.
- Laser therapy reduces the appearance of redness and enlarged blood vessels.
