It is believed that an overactive immune system causes psoriasis. The symptoms of psoriasis include inflammation, flaking, red patches, and white thickened areas of skin. Some people may have skin that starts to crack and bleed. Even fingernails show signs of discoloration and pitting. In extreme cases, the nails start to crumble away from the nail bed and detach. Scalp involvement is not uncommon. Scaly areas of plaque can develop beneath the hair or at the base of the hairline.
Joint Disorders and Psoriasis
Many sufferers of psoriasis also experience joint pain that is brought on from a condition known as psoriatic arthritis. The person’s joints become achy and swollen. This complication can occur in 10 to 30 percent of all sufferers. Everyone is different, but common causes of a flare-up of psoriasis include:
- Weather
- Infections
- Alcohol ingestion
- Stress
- Injury (especially to the skin)
- Certain medications such as beta blockers.
- Smoking
