Contact dermatitis appears as an itchy, crusty, red rash. The afflicted area can also have an oozy or weepy appearance. The rash arises when an individual encounter a substance or allergen that causes a reaction. Soaps, cosmetics, jewelry, plants, makeup, and fragrances can all cause contact dermatitis in susceptible individuals. Although not life-threatening, the rash is extremely uncomfortable and can disrupt a person’s life.
You should identify the cause of the contact dermatitis to avoid future contact. The cause of allergic dermatitis can often be identified by a physician through a series of tests so that a sufferer can better avoid the allergen.
To treat contact dermatitis successfully, you need to identify and avoid the cause of your reaction. If you can avoid the offending substance, the rash usually clears up in several weeks. You can try soothing your skin with cool, wet compresses, anti-itch creams and other self-care steps. Topical steroids are also often prescribed. In severe cases, a physician may prescribe oral steroids.
