Youthful skin has rapid regeneration skills, but aging slows down the ability to shed the dead cells. This leaves your skin looking dull and lifeless. It lacks the glow of youth. A facial peel, which is also called a chemical peel, restores your skin’s vibrancy. The chemicals gently exfoliate the dead layer of skin away and encourage new cell production. Many people opt to undergo a facial peel not only on their face but also on their chest and the back of their hands.
What Does a Facial Peel Treat?
There are normally three levels of chemical peels available: light, medium, and deep. The facial peel is used to treat the following:
- Dullness
- Wrinkles
- Age Spots
- Hyperpigmentation
- Sagging
- Scars
- Sun damage
- Melasma
- Acne scarring
When is a Chemical Peel Right for You?
If you are considering undergoing a chemical peel, then you will want to meet with your aesthetic technician to discuss your unique needs. Here are just a few reasons why a facial peel might be the right choice for you:
- Your skin has started to display wrinkles
- You have noticeable sun damage
- Scarring makes your skin’s surface uneven
- You may need treatment of certain precancerous skin growths
How is a Skin Peel Performed?
A facial peel can be performed right in your medical provider’s office. Your skin care professional will apply a light chemical solution across the surface of your skin using a swab, brush, or cotton pad. The solution will not be placed on your eyes, brows, or lips. You may feel a slight tingling or burning but the sensation is always minimal. The solution will be left on your skin for a predetermined amount of time that depends on your unique needs. After the chemicals in the peel have been neutralized, a deep layer of ointment is applied to protect the skin. A protective crust usually develops across the treated area. The crust typically remains for a day or two. In rare cases, a dressing might also be applied.
How Long Does It Take to Heal?
Your healing time will depend on the type of peel used. If you had a light or superficial peel, then you can usually start wearing makeup the next day. A medium peel often takes seven to 14 days to heal completely. Recuperation from a deep peel averages 14 to 21 days.
We offer several types of facial peels including glycolic, salicylic and trichloroacetic acid as well as combination peels from Skin Medica for all skin types. Contact our office to learn more.
